As paint dries, volatile chemicals evaporate into the air in a process called off-gassing. This process, which can pose a health risk, can go on for years after the paint has been applied. For this reason, the EPA requires that paint manufacturers list the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) contained in the paint (or stain or varnish) on the label of the container. Paints with low or no VOC’s are now available from most major paint manufacturers. They are the healthier alternative to conventional paints – both for interior and exterior applications.
